The crew of the Plastiki, named in honor of the original Kon-Tiki voyage in 1947, weathered fierce storms after leaving San Francisco on March 20. The 130-day voyage was reasonably trouble free with the craft standing up well to big seas and strong winds of over 60 knots. The expedition’s leader, David de Rothschild, said he was inspired by a 2006 United Nations report that said pollution, particularly plastic waste, threatened the world’s oceans. He wanted to prove that trash could be effectively reused. The Plastiki, he said, is powered by solar panels and windmills. An organic glue made of sugar cane and cashews holds the bottles together, and the mast is recycled irrigation pipe.

The craft has been recycled one more time, this time into an exhibit. The “Plastiki” will spend the next month at the Australian National Maritime Museum in Sydney.

Well no, but apparently you can now sit back, relax with your family and enjoy a sumptuous can of …..sandwich? Yep, a “CANDWICH.” Think of it: no more having to peel off those pesky plastic wrappers on the individual cheese slices, no more wiping off crusty condiment squeeze bottles. And, c’mon, those bread twist-ties are enough to give you carpal tunnel! The Candwich comes in three flavors: peanut butter and strawberry jam, peanut butter and grape jam, and, the most terrifying of all, BBQ Chicken. This ingenious cuisine is brought to you by Mark One Foods, and plans for Pepperoni Pizza and French Toast Candwiches are in the works. And, somewhat disturbingly, there is more: The yellow circle on the left side of the can says, “Candy Surprise Inside.” Not clear whether the candy is in the sandwich itself or a bonus side item, but either way I think we can agree that there should be no surprises in a sandwich in a can. Come to think of it, there probably shouldn’t even be a sandwich that comes in a can in the first place…

It is now possible to get zero tan lines without going to a nude beach. There’s alternative swimwear that allows an all-over tan. The secret is in the fabric, which is called “Transol”. It allows almost 80% of sunlight to penetrate what appears to be an ordinary swimsuit. This is a good news/bad news scenario, however: the first time you go out in “Transol” swimwear, you’ll need to apply sunscreen. Everywhere. Otherwise, you risk burning yourself, well everywhere, including “where the sun don’t’ shine”, at least not up until now…

But one researcher wants to add cigarette butts to the list. Jun Zhao, a Ph.D. student in the School of Energy and Power Engineering at Xi’an Jiaotong University in China, found that extracts of cigarette butts that have been submerged in water can help prevent steel from rusting. The study claims that application of the cigarette material to a certain type of steel could save millions of dollars a year that oil industries spend on steel repair. Zhao explains that application of cigarette butts as a corrosion inhibitor could reduce the use of chemical materials applied to steel today and cut down on cigarette pollution. According to the study, 4.5 trillion cigarette butts pollute the environment every year – yuck!!! Cigarette butts are a major contributor to marine debris, and they’re generally considered the most commonly found piece of litter in beach cleanups. They pose a hazard for species that choke on butts or are killed by the toxins. Zhao acknowledges that cigarette litter is widespread and that it would be difficult for individuals or groups to organize litter collection, but he is hopeful that garbage collection agencies may one day lead an initiative focused on cigarette butt recycling.
