Gibson Guitar will introduce a limited edition guitar resembling this 1959 Les Paul that Don Felder used to write & record on the Eagles’ “Hotel California” album..including the title song, which features Don & Joe Walsh  on one of the most famous solos of all time. Don sez..”It’s a phenomenal feeling to have written something that has become so recognized and well-received world-wide.” Amen…LOVE that fret work…and I’m telling Don that in the other pic from Jackson Rancheria a year or so ago.

Hair today….

Troy Polamalu, the safety for the Pittsburgh Steelers, is a spokesperson for Head & Shoulders shampoo. That company just insured the NFL star’s notorious locks with a $ 1 million policy with Lloyd’s of London.  His hair “style” is a growing trend with NFL players..on the plus side, it probably cushions the blow on helmet to helmet hits.  And it looks better than a “bonytail” or a “skullet.” (bonytail=bald with a ponytail..skullet=bald with a mullet.)

I spent 4 years in New Jersey in the mid 70’s, and witnessed Bruce Springsteen’s rise from local hero to international rock boss.  He–like Dylan–is a modern day poet laureate, a wordsmith who paints vivid lyrical imagery..especially in his early work. Personally, I haven’t been a BIG fan since “Born in the USA.”  But I remember wandering the boardwalk in Asbury Park in 1976–before they renovated it for gambling–and spying, on the rickety planks, a boarded-up shack with a sign that read “Madam Marie’s.”  I laughed, realizing this was the spark for a line in Springsteen’s song “4th of July..Asbury Park (Sandy).”  The line..”Did ya hear the cops finally busted Madam Marie..for telling fortunes better than they do.”     I graduated college, and left New Jersey, the exact WEEK that “Darkness on the Edge of Town” was released–June 2, 1978.   And this November..the album will  be RE-RELEASED..in a massive 3 CD, 3 DVD collection. Included will be rare & previously unreleased songs, live recordings, the “making of” documentary, and much more. Get details here http://www.gibson.com/en-us/Lifestyle/News/?Index=11.  Bruce once said..”Darkness was my samurai record..stripped to the frame, and ready to rumble.”  It also reminds me of my long drive outta Jersey to California.

The 18th at Winchester Country Club…511 yds from the tips, par 5.  Elevated tee box, massive rock outcroppings on the left..the huge & beautiful clubhouse in the background..overlooking the course. Hard to single out ONE signature hole at this spectacular mountain course..but this one stands out for me. Winchester is currently fixing some “compaction” issues on the greens & fairways, so it’s not in the BEST shape..but give it a month or 2, and check out this beauty. Info at www.winchestercountryclub.com.  Located just a few minutes past Auburn up I-80, outside Colfax.

Jaded as I am..I thought that the Steven Tyler-Aerosmith “feud” a coupla months ago was just PR leading up to their current tour. And when Tyler was named as a possible American Idol judge, well–more of the same PR hype. Steven himself even joked, “..and I’m NOT pregnant with Joe Perry’s love child.”  But nowwwww…apparently Tyler is being seriously considered for the Idol  judges panel..and that has generated some friction between bandmates.   Last nite in Toronto, while the band was playing Love in an Elevator, Tyler bumped into Joe, causing him  to lose his balance and stumble.  Then, while Steven is on the edge of the stage, Perry hip checked him into the crowd!  This is beginning to look like a pro wrestling grudge match…

The Gibson Flying V guitar looked futuristic when it was introduced in 1958…and STILL does today. Personally, tho I like the rippin tone, the V never felt comfortable to play…something about the balance of the body.  But.. Albert King played one, as did Jimi sometimes…and  in the heavy metal world, it was KK from Priest and Michael Schenker who made them popular.  Schenker is on his 30th anniversary tour with MSG, and will be at the Boardwalk in Orangevale this Tuesday nite..no doubt shreddin on his V.  Tix & info at www.boardwalkrocks.com.

Hello, Dali! ..she’s a friendly, 2 yr old pointer/German wirehair mix looking for a forever home. Dali can be a bit nervous around loud noises & unfamiliar situations..but she is eager to please, and should continue her positive training. Dali loves to splash around in a pool on a hot summer day. She does well around other dogs & even cats..but kids should be 10+ in her forever home. Find out more about Dali at www.placerspca.org.

The 30th annual S2S concert happens this Sunday 8/15 at the Crest Theater…a sold-out show! It’s been my privilege to MC the festivities for what?–7 years now?  The 8 week program is put on by Skip’s Music, open to 12-17 yr olds, who form bands, and write  3 original songs. This year, 21 bands will perform their 3 song sets…and then, in the near future, will get to record one of their tunes at a local studio. In this picture from last year’s Stairway concert, one of the boys in the band decided a kilt would be fashionable…hmmm…**photo by Kevin Graft**
