Curling_Canada_Torino_2006Why is curling an Olympic sport?  Have YOU ever seen a curling match in person? Neither have I..and the last time I used a broom on ice it was to sweep off the steps at a winter cabin in Truckee.  The game is basically shuffleboard on ice, using brooms and rocks to score.  Curling originated in Scotland in the 1500’s..but now is most popular in Canada. No surprise there, eh? Canada still dominates the Olympic games in curling.  Only about 16 thousand people “curl” here in the U.S. ..which is less than the number of folks you might find playing softball on any given summer night here in Sacramento. When the curling matches come on TV this Olympic season…I’ll probably be making a refrigerator run.  Or watching my fingernails grow..that’s just about as exciting.
